Maintain Lower Cooling Bills This Summer

|

During the summer months in Sarasota, Florida, the heat and humidity can make it tough to stay comfortable. Running your air conditioning system nonstop is one solution, but it comes with a hefty price tag in the form of your monthly bills. These tips can help you maintain a comfortable atmosphere while keeping your cooling bills at a reasonable cost this summer.

Change the Filter

Your air conditioning system uses a filter to prevent dirt, dust, pet hair, dander, pollen, and other contaminants from clogging the ducts and damaging the components. When too much debris moves into the system, this can cause the efficiency of the unit to decrease, which means it has to use more energy to cool and move the air. Keep up with regular filter changes by putting a reminder on your calendar or your phone to swap it out every month or two. With a clean filter, the system can operate more efficiently, which keeps costs down.

Schedule Routine Maintenance

Air conditioning systems have estimated lifespans from their manufacturers, but these estimates assume that you’re keeping up with regular maintenance. An AC should be tuned up every year in preparation for the summertime cooling needs. During your tune-up, your technician will inspect all components of the air conditioner, including the indoor and outdoor units, as well as test to make sure it is operating efficiently and producing cool air.

Use Fans

Although ceiling, box, and floor fans don’t actually cool the air, they can help keep things moving for a more comfortable atmosphere in your home. In fact, the wind chill effect produced by a fan can allow you to raise the temperature on your thermostat by several degrees without feeling too warm. Fans don’t use as much energy as a traditional air conditioning system, so you can run them for hours without being wasteful. Make sure to keep fans running in the rooms that are currently in use but shut them off when you leave.
