How You Can Improve Your IAQ in Your Home

|

The indoor air quality in your home may not be something you think a lot about, but it plays a very big role in how comfortable your home is, as well as how healthy you and your family are inside of it. When your IAQ is at the optimal level, you don’t notice it. When air quality is poor, however, you feel it.

Here are just a few ways you can improve the air quality inside your home and keep your comfort, and your health, in tip-top shape.

Check Your Air Filters

The air filters inside your home are there to catch dirt, dust, and debris floating through your heating and cooling system. But they only work for so long. Once these filters become dirty and clogged up, their abilities are diminished, and allergens are free to roam around your home and irritate your skin and sinuses. Checking your air filter regularly is a good first step toward healthy air.

Upgrade Your Air Filters

All air filters are not created equal. As it turns out, air filters constructed from fiberglass come with a rating. Filters with ratings between 1-4 won’t capture dust mite waste, or instance, or mold spores. Filters with ratings between 5 and 8, however, can catch these allergens and help keep your home’s air clean. There are even higher rated filters, but before you buy one to install, check first with a heating and cooling specialist to make sure it’s okay to use with your system.

Add Whole-House Ventilation

There’s a lot of good that can come with having a well-insulated home: for instance, you’ll save on heating and cooling costs, as the air you pump into your home won’t easily escape. Unfortunately, your home’s ability to keep air trapped inside can backfire, as it also means pollutants and allergens also have a hard time getting out. A whole-house ventilation system can help push these irritants out of your home.
